A project for new dense-pack ecological villages to be constructed as off-grid self-sustained elements outside Port-Au-Prince.
SITERather than build in Port-au-Prince where the clean-up project after the earthquake is already mired in political bickering, speed up by building new housing settlements outside utilizing recycled concrete from the damage.
WATERThe inadequate water system which only supplied 40% of Port-au-Prince is now destroyed. On seaside sites, install solar desalination plants for each village dense-pack, supply water from new reservoirs uphill from the new villages lifted via wind power. This technology now exists. Likewise, a natural waste disposal technology would service each 200-person dense-pack village. Grey water and storm water is recycled for garden irrigation.
ELECTRICITYSolar PV cells line all new roofs of the two-story courtyard houses, supplying all lighting needs and solar cook stoves can be utilized.
ARCHITECTUREDense Pack villages of courtyard housing can be constructed with recycled concrete and high-strength steel which resists hurricanes & earthquake level 9. These can be constructed with local labor. Interior and exterior colors can be painted by the Haitians. These pedestrian quarters are sites with fruit trees and natural vegetation between them, maximizing the natural landscape. Each village has spaces for shops along its inner street and a public schoolroom or chapel and recreation space. Each village has approximately 70 units of 120m2 with an average population of 200.
SCHOOLS8000 schools have been destroyed; the universities have been destroyed, therefore the construction of educational space is a fi rst priority addressing the 50% of Haiti’s population which is under the age of 18. A new campus structured of all types of education facilities can be sited next to the new villages—utilizing similar independent off grid infrastructural elements.
