This competition entry for a luxury hotel complex is made up of a series of loosely arranged buildings on a raised podium over-looking the beach. It mediates between two dramatic forces: the relentless grid of the city that is abruptly cut off by a two-hundred-foot cliff, and an equally relentless, but magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean. The buildings form part of an ordered composition based on a series of overlapping grids. The podium is a raised ground floor area built over a parking garage, both being defined by the beach which acts as a datum line and edge running parallel to the ocean. The garage below this podium provides a public parking in addition to 500 spaces that are for the exclusive use of the hotel.
The hotel is designed so that 216 rooms are distributed over four independent buildings, with a fifth, central building incorporating the restaurant and other eating and recreational amenities. The five buildings are connected by a canopy-covered pedestrian walkway.
