The same client who commissioned the studio for their Chicago house asked for another project on the adjacent plot. This time, they wanted a contemporary art gallery by converting a residential building from the early 20th century.
To integrate the museum into the urban context while preserving the historic facade, the ceramic exterior was kept, but the interior structure was unsuitable for the new program and was demolished. The brick shell was then completed with a concrete volume while the interstitial space became a circulation zone. A new penthouse with a skylight was added on the top floor, and a polished terrace beneath the northern eaves reflects the surrounding tree canopy.
